About 70 percent of the population live in rural areas and most depend on subsisitence agriculture, includingnlivestock and foresty. Only 8 percent of land is cultivable as the landscapes of Bhutan is too steep, too high or too cold to carry out farmming.Even the farms are scattered in difficult terrain, making farm laour intensive and difficult.

In the olden days farmimng was difficult as all works are done manually. However with the advancement of technology it became easier and the production of crops also increased a lot.Rice is the main stape crop and is grown by about 60 percent of rural household. Most households rear livestock for home consumption and nomadic herding are the predominant activities in the alphine and cool temperate zones.

With high mountains and narrow valleys, opportinities for producing food and generating income are limited. In 2013,Bhutan's ministry of Agriculture and Forest also pledged to ensure that the country became the first completely organic country. The aim was to focus on the use of organic manure for fertilizer and to reduce the use of pesticides and herbicide in land.It has only 2.93% of cultivated area.
